Tiffinbites (Canary Wharf) Overview

If after reading this review, you decide to head down to this branch of Tiffinbites, then you’re best to meet up with your companion at some place you both know, cause if you try to find each other in the multi-story, chain-bar infested, suit filled, futuristic complex that is the Canary Wharf, the chances are you won’t. And if you do, you’ll have an agonising time doing so. Every street and every corner looks the same. Try asking a police officer for directions and he’ll refer you to the colour-coded street maps dotted around the place. The local workers won’t even give you the time of day, as they are too busy enjoying themselves after a hard day at the office (although I doubt they would be much help during office hours). So if you don’t want to have a bad start to your evening then try to meet up first. To give you a wee tip; it’s situated next to Wagamama and opposite Nando’s in the Jubilee Place shopping and eatery complex.

It’s such a shame this venue is such a dragon to find, cause it’s a fab place to go for either a snack or a full-on meal. To help you forget the fact that you’re sitting in a shopping mall, it’s best if you sit inside. Plus, inside you can enjoy the numerous plasma screens sprinkled around the place playing proper old-school Bollywood movies. The rest of the ultra modern furnishings look like they’ve been dipped in a chaotic mix of colourful spices. Bright, busy, but totally structured.

All their food is low in fat, in fact, it’s as low as 10%, and all their meat is certified halal by the Halal Food Association. And boy is it tasty. We started with the Chicken Tikka Chaat – bits of tandoori cooked chicken with onions and covered in chutney and yogurt – was exceptionally spicy, but quite refreshing at the same time. While the Keema Tikki – potato patties filled with spicy lean meat – was hot and quite filling.

The main courses arrived almost immediately after the starters. A bit of a breather would have been nice, but it’s a lot better than having to wait around for hours. We had two lamb dishes, Lamb Rogan Josh and Nihari, which both came in the metal tiffin boxes with rice, veg and a stack of plain naans. The lamb in the Rogan Josh curry was beautifully tender and there was plenty of it, while the accompanying green pea masala was bursting with flavours. The Nihari’s lamb shank dish was potently fiery and shouldn’t be consumed by the faint hearted.

The service was polite, friendly and super attentive. All in all you’re guaranteed to have a pleasant and yummy meal.

Shanna Schreuder.

The cooking at Tiffinbites is low in fat which means that it’s lighter, so their generous but not excessive portions make Tiffinbites an ideal and speedy lunch time option. Choose from a selection of main meals or even just a snack. Relax and watch the latest Bollywood film on one of their large screen TV’s and grab a drink at the bar. Tiffinbites also offer a take-away. Either turn up and order, or phone through first so that it’s ready when you arrive. After 5pm they serve a different menu that offers a slightly more lavish spread of mouth-watering dishes for a true Indian feast. (Updated 03/08/2007)
