The Empress of India Overview

The Empress of India is the sister pub to the acclaimed Gun in Docklands, E14, The White Swan Pub and Dining Room on Fetter Lane, EC4 and The Well in Clerkenwell, EC1, The Empress of India was originally built as a public house in the 1880s and today reverts back to her original name, so called in honour of Queen Victoria, and her additional role of The Empress of
India.

Set to prevail in the promising local area, making a mark in the current culinary desert, Tom and Ed Martin are however not content with just adding just another gastropub to the local London scene. The Empress of India will provide breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea and supper dishes daily with a sophisticated take-away service available in the new year. Daytime nods to the plethora of families in the community with a special children’s menu.

Head chef Kane Planken, provides the predominantly modern British menus, using the finest quality ingredients from local producers where possible.

The 19th century building’s design, courtesy of the Martin brothers in conjunction with Concorde Interiors, takes inspiration from her title and her associated colonial roots. The noble exterior features deep, rich red canopies which contrast against a soft white wooden facia complete with long elegant windows. The main entrance leads into the dining area and its hand-laid mosaic black and white floor, with Empress of India logo inlay, ruby red chesterfield style fixed banquette seating and bespoke dark beech furniture, all which reach to the far feature wall covered in a beautiful hand painted wallpaper depicting early views of India. The bar area blends smoothly to the restaurant with two mussel shell chandeliers showering twinkling light above, highlighting the antique tiger’s head staking claim on the stairs. An exquisite pewter bar, with striking back lit glass shelving, is set off by an exceptional antique 1920s art deco mirror originally from the Rex cinema in Calcutta. An open kitchen and large chrome rotisserie punctuates the rear of the room, adding an element of theatre. (Updated 24/07/2008)
