Fluid Eating's Review of Ten Tables
This cosy restaurant just a stone’s throw from Gloucester Road tube brings a new dining experience to the area having shifted from tapas to modern European cuisine in October 2007.
It sits adjacent to the Rydges Kensington Plaza hotel but every effort has been made to give Ten Tables a strong identity of its own. The Brazilian chef Marco has developed an array of tempting à la carte options and the staff pride themselves on its grilled options, not least the mixed grill which would satisfy the hungriest of diners.
My meal had two real highlights. The first was a starter of generously sized crispy fried Tempura prawns which were both plump and tasty. The mango and chilli accompaniment gave the dish a nice tang and the fruity addition meant it was also refreshing.
The second was my main: a juicy beef fillet cooked to perfection. It is accompanied by lightly grilled cherry tomatoes on the vine, Portobello mushrooms and tasty fries which are crispy but not greasy. It comes with a range of sauces to satisfy even the most demanding steak lovers. Ten Tables’ new menu has dishes which are at the more premium end of the market and this is its flagship example. However, the quality of this dish means it’s a difficult choice to turn down. If you fancy something a little lighter though, there’s always a salmon fillet option which is cooked simply but has an excellent flavour.
The wine list contains a select band of reds and whites from a variety of countries and is in keeping with the restaurant’s desire to offer simple, good food and wine in a friendly environment. To take one example, The Ochagavia Silvestre, a bold Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile, was an apt accompaniment to the beef fillet.
This restaurant is a very convenient and pleasant place to stop for a bite in Gloucester Road – just don’t make the mistake of walking past it. Dinner is available from 5:30-10pm.
