Stara Polska Overview

As central London’s first Polish restaurant – Stara Polska really is one of a kind. Since opening in November 2006, Stara Polska has been overwhelmed by press attention and rightly so.

Having never eaten Polish food before, all my simple mind could conjure up was vodka, stew, cabbage and more stew. To some extent this was true – but what I didn’t anticipate was just how much us Londoners were in need of some hearty winter food.

For a Tuesday this restaurant was packed – Marta – the owner, waitress, PR and SP's 'everything' was forced to turn people away. This is a very good sign for any restaurant and as someone who has reviewed many restaurants on a weeknight – I have never been somewhere so packed.

We ate polish sausage and mountain smoked cheese for starters and for mains we tried the Bigos (stew with potato cakes) and the Hunters Stew. I absolutely loved the hot stew; it was rich, tasty and very good value for money at only £7.50.

The whole place is dimly lit by candle light and very rustic. Polish music played softly in the background creating a very authentic atmosphere while we dunked our bread in our food and drank Zywiec (Polish beer).

With all its press attention and popularity it seems as though London has definitely given Stara Polska's polish food the thumbs up.

Stara Polska ‘Old Poland’ evokes the atmosphere and spirit of the traditional Polish restaurants and bars in the towns in and around the Tatra Mountains in Southern Poland. It is an area steeped in tradition and customs that have been followed for centuries. The harsh winters followed by long hot summers create exceptional conditions for growing the finest fruit and vegetables anywhere. Step into Stara Polska and feel as if you are in Poland.
