Rules Overview
Rules was established by Thomas Rule in 1798 making it the oldest restaurant in London. In the year Napolean opened his campaign in Egypt, Thomas Rule promised his despairing family that he would say goodbye to his wayward past ansd settle down. No sooner said than he opened an oyster bar in Covent Garden. To the surprise and disbelief of his family, this enterprise proved to be not only successful but lasting.
It serves traditional British food, specialising in classic game cookery, oysters, pies and puddings. As well as the main restaurant, which can seat around 90 people, Rules has four Private Dining Rooms. The Private Rooms have a dedicated team of staff specifically assigned to delivering the experience of dining in these unique, historical rooms. All rooms are air-conditioned and smoking is permitted. There are no room hire charges - you only pay for what you consume plus service.
The rooms are available 7 days a week and are often used for product launches, private corporate meetings, special family anniversaries, long service award occasions and cocktail parties. They can be used at lunch or dinner time and your room can have a separate entrance if needed, for security and privacy. The rooms are intimate - the largest seats up to 20 people.
Rules is renowned for its game dishes and as such, the Game Season dates play an important part in shaping their menus. They also have their own estate in the High Pennines so are able to control the quality of the game they serve at source. Rules is in the heart of London’s Theatreland. (Updated 29/01/2006)
