Re-Launch of Tabernacle in Shoreditch

  • Shoreditch Establishment Re-Opening Following Refurbishment in September 2008

Re-Launch of Tabernacle in Shoreditch

Contained over two floors within a converted Victorian warehouse Tabernacle in Shoreditch has since its launch in 2004 provided a fantastic social space for its customers. Unveiling a new direction, Tabernacle re-opened at the end of September 2008 following an extensive refurbishment. The venue boasts brand new interiors, new management, a delicious seasonal food menu and fresh musical programming.

Spread throughout the bar, restaurant and club, Tabernacle’s refurbishment has focused all three of the venue’s social spaces so that while having their own unique look, each area flows into each other thematically. Overall, Tabernacle introduces a more relaxed, pared down atmosphere in the restaurant and bar that will cater not only to formal business lunches, but also to café style eating and post work cocktails. Downstairs, the club has been completely re-fitted and designed to be a fun, flamboyant space – ideal for a Shoreditch party crowd.

The refit has been overseen by owner Steven Ross, who wanted to refresh the interiors of Tabernacle and redefine its three spaces both independently and as integral parts of a successful destination venue. However, Steven is keen to point out that, unlike many Hoxton venues, which self-consciously cater to a particular market and preach cool, Tabernacle focuses on the uncontrived enjoyment of its many types of customers, whether they are fine dining or disco dancing.

The new staff uniforms match the re-fit perfectly having been especially designed by Bolongaro Trevor, an edgy label recently launched by the founders and former designers behind All Saints.

Everyone from foodies and trend-setters to City workers and students will be drawn to Tabernacle’s beautifully cooked seasonal food, delicious cocktails, relaxed atmosphere and cutting edge DJs.

Tabernacle – Eating

Tabernacle’s knowledgeable and innovative Head Chef, James Robson (formerly Head Chef of Wapping Project restaurant) lets the seasons do the work by focusing on vibrant produce to create the restaurant’s ever evolving, authentic and exciting menu.

Robson insists that the rare breed meat he serves is of the highest quality from trusted British suppliers, his fish fresh from UK shores. A trained butcher, he buys meat on the bone and all butchery is done in-house, using various cuts to make a variety of beautiful dishes and reducing unnecessary wastage. Seasonal ingredients used in these classic regional Italian dishes are sourced twice a week from Milan’s famous and colourful food market.

The restaurant has been redesigned to encourage a relaxed eating atmosphere that perfectly complements its menu. Informal and friendly, the restaurant is the ideal setting to linger over mouth-watering Italian cooking with friends and colleagues.

Examples from the menu include:

· Char grilled squid, blood orange & shaved fennel salad, salmoriglio - £6.95
· Risotto, summer girolles, thyme, pecorino di fossa & truffle - £6.25
· Cacciucco alla Livornese’- Tuscan fish stew with monkfish, mussels & scallops - £16.75

Tabernacle – Drinking

The bar at Tabernacle is light and airy, its exposed brickwork nods firmly towards New York. The refurbishment includes new lounge seating designed to maximise comfort, whilst the lighting will be changed to add to this relaxed atmosphere. By day the bar will have a café feel, with a chalkboard advertising each day’s special sandwiches, salads and paninis – perfect for casual meetings or quick lunches. At night the bar accommodates pre-dinner cocktails, post work drinks and late and lively sessions. Tabernacle’s cocktail list is extensive and inclusive, containing old classics alongside new creations. The bar also draws from the restaurant’s menu, containing a monthly special cocktail made from seasonal produce. Tabernacle’s upstairs bar will be serving late night café food and coffee to peckish clubbers until 2am.

Tabernacle – Dancing

The most dramatically different part of the new Tabernacle will be the club downstairs. With a turquoise and black colour scheme, velvet chesterfields and mirrors, the interiors will be anything but subtle, but the club’s crowning glory will be a 1970s style LED illuminated dance floor in the middle of the room. Tabernacle’s club will be run by Ben Rymer, a legendary Shoreditch promoter whose previous club nights saw Mylo, Soulwax, LCD Soundsystem and Erol Alkan DJ. In charge of all of Tabernacle’s musical programming, Rymer has lined up the finest East End DJs to rotate residencies every week. Friday nights will welcome the best female DJs in town, with pop and party sets from the girls like The Voguettes and Lou and Nova. ‘My Days Of Courting’ will take over Saturday nights, featuring classic disco and vintage house from the likes of Horsemeat Disco, Gucci Soundsystem and Disco Bloodbath.

Tabernacle – Private Hire

Because of its location and flexible hire capabilities, Tabernacle is the ideal place to hold a private event. General Manager Michael Ryan (previously events manager at The Great Eastern Hotel) can use his events experience to oversee all aspects of an event and ensure it runs smoothly. Whether it is a private birthday dinner, a business meeting or a launch party, Tabernacle can provide affordable catering, entertainment, drinks and are savvy to all matter of private functions.
