Murphis Karaoke Bar & Restaurant Overview
From private K-TV rooms in China where skateboarders crooned Taiwanese love ballads to the Dun A Ri bar in Kings’ Cross where belting out Summer of ’69 with a fat middle aged chav felt like the right thing to do – my experience with karaoke has been diverse. So naturally, I was curious to see what Murphi’s in Farringdon had to offer in terms of quirk.
Upon arrival we are greeted by the lovely Nolley Adam – the Thai chef and karaoke master, whose bubbly enthusiasm adds to the bar’s charm. Murphi, himself who introduces us, explains the plans for the next month – they will open a sushi, Mexican and Thai restaurant upstairs, and move the karaoke down to the lounge styled lower level.
The bar is brilliantly situated – steps from Farringdon station, across the road from Turnmills - making Murphi’s the ideal pop-in spot for little sing song after too many pints with the colleagues, or your ladies on a wild girls’ night out.
The bar features iconic American artwork and serves your typical poisons. Our neighbours drowned themselves in Moët and sang Christina Aguilera tunes like overdoing it was going out of style. We happily stuck to our vodka sodas mixed and served by the friendly and accommodating barmaids.
The word karaoke comes from the Japanese ‘empty’ and ‘orchestra’ and emerged in the eighties as a way for business men let loose after a hard day of dealing. There was nothing empty about Murphi’s pub on our Friday evening – however everyone was certainly letting loose, which is exactly what this highly unpretentious, merry bar seems to be designed for.
