Masala Zone (Earls Court) Overview
Masala Zone has a confident facade with a large open window pane allowing potential customers a good view of not only how busy the restaurant looks but also an over the shoulder peep of the open kitchen before entering. First impression upon entering one of London's "Top Five Cheap Eats" (Time Out) was 'funky'. Can you say that about an Indian restaurant? Not sure if you can but we have. Bamboo hanging from the industrial ceiling painted with a vivid red colour which is also the background colour of the muriel covered walls.
Unlike your normal Indian, Masala Zone Earls Court is lively and buzzing with conversation and this was on a Monday - later in the week bookings are advisable, as the queue stretches out on Earls Court Road. Simple, tightly packed tables doesn't immediately induce a setting of prolonged dining but the deceptively comfortable chairs and delicious food more than make up for it.
Highly efficient and friendly staff direct you to your table and give you enough attention without being too overbearing. The restaurant becomes busy with tourists from the local Earls Court Hotels and B&B's and local residents from the nearby Kensington area. Food is prepared and cooked in the traditional Indian way which may leave you feeling that some dishes slightly on the salty side but its "how we do it in India".
Masala means spice - which is the very heart and soul of Indian cooking. A couple of drinks to get your taste buds ready is either a mango lassi (non-alcoholic) or a mango flavoured prosecco champagne (alcoholic) - then go for a "Grand Thali" - a complete nutritionally balanced meal on a platter - the way traditional Indian families eat at home. You will experience a complete selection of tastes that at about £10 is amazingly good value. Indian beer, basic cocktails and a short wine list is available by the bottle, carafe or glass.
Masala Zone Earls Court would be high up on our recommendations as a winter warmer. A restaurant with excellent value food and drink. Totally non-smoking, with ‘well-cooked’ curries, ‘prompt’ service & ‘great value for money’. (Updated 17/11/2006)
