La Nuova Delizia Overview
La Nuova Delizia is a restaurant for the locals – perfect for a straight-forward and delicious Italian meal with a bottle of wine if you cannot be bothered to cook. The punters are definitely a Chelsea lot. People do not travel far to get here. And as much as I would love to say they should – it is after all a fantastically reliable meal out – I would not advertise it to outsiders. It is too simple and unremarkable for that.
La Nuova Delizia serves up good Italian fare (risottos, pasta and pizzas) but does not pay attention to presentation. The décor is basic. The walls are painted yellow and there are two large mirrors to make the cosy and intimate restaurant feel bigger. The only other decorations are a couple of exotic pot plants in each window sill and a large impressionist painting. But that adds to its charm.
La Nuova Delizia does not try hard. It is totally unpretentious and down-to-earth – something so many restaurants fail to be these days. The food is not fussy. I order their special for the night – Fusilli gambero, a prawn and tomato based pasta (for £7.95) while my friend tries out their Margarita pizza (for a very reasonable £4.95). It is huge and beats a Pizza Express pizza any day.
It feels like the real Italian thing – and the staff add to this. They are all Italian – and very friendly. We drink the house white wine (£9.95) and pick at a seafood salad (£6.90), while the other punters all tuck into pizzas, which seem to be the speciality here. It is also possible to take away a pizza – and that is something I shall definitely try out in the future.
La Nuova Delizia is perfect for a civilised and quiet night. Frank Sinatra plays in the background while you fill up on an as-close-to home-cooked meal as you can get. It is relaxed and comfortable. And, as a local, I will be back very soon. (Updated 27/02/2006)
