L'Autre Pied Overview
When is a restaurant akin to a work of art? When a highly-rated chef named Marcus Eaves is given what the co-proprietor of L’Autre Pied calls “a blank canvas” to showcase his culinary repertoire in Marylebone. Following his much-lauded experience as sous-chef at Pied à Terre on Charlotte Street, Eaves has now been given the lead role in this fashionable corner of W1 with the support of proprietors David Moore and Shane Osborne.
Eaves’ artistry does not disappoint: a blend of audacity and creativity runs throughout the menu. I went for Moore’s recommendations and could see that careful consideration had been given to the composition of the dish in each case. The puy lentil velouté has an exceptional lightness and smooth foam which bubbles in the mouth. For the main course, look no further than the hare – it is cooked to perfection in a luxurious sauce but beautifully offset by the lightness of the accompanying potatoes, lentils and greens. To finish off there was the formidable pain d’epice emulsion with a deliciously sweet crackle and a chocolate puff.
Keep an eye out for an excellent selection of wines, with a good number available by the glass. A red highlight was the Elias Mora semi-crianza with its rich flavour of forest fruits; in white, the Sardinian Vermintino has a honey hue and a hint of caramel.
The sleek and cool exterior is perfect for the central London setting and there is a relaxed feel to the décor which is complemented by the gentle lighting. It’s all part of Moore and Osborne’s vision for an elegant and informal fine dining experience with an easy ambience. With no tablecloths and a tie strictly optional, L’Autre Pied is full of treats for the palate and a pleasurable dining experience for work or play.
