Megaro Overview

If you’re going to welcome international visitors at St. Pancras, it is vital to have cuisine on the doorstep that would be well received in any country. Leading the charge for fine dining in the King Cross/St. Pancras area is Megaro, a restaurant which forms part of a deluxe hotel but is anything but a hotel restaurant.

Behind the scenes works executive chef Paul Ribbands, a veteran of luxury dining at The Lainsborough and The Westbury who prides himself on producing English and continental food to fit in with the fresh and funky design of this new establishment.

I went for the general manager’s recommendation of scallops for my starter and was not disappointed: the delightful tenderness and fresh flavour was complemented by a smooth and beautifully tomatoey ratatouille. Next was a pan-fried fillet of sea bass. Ribbans mastered this notoriously difficult fish with consummate ease thanks to flesh that glided effortlessly from the skin and a delightful gravy that intensified the flavour without overpowering it. As for desert, a coin is the only way to resolve the agonising choice between the satisfyingly creamy trio of panna cotta and the sinfully indulgent chocolate torte.

There’s plenty to keep even the fussiest foody busy: as the name would suggest the du jour menu changes with regularity and there’s also a fresh and varied à la carte menu for those who like to be more settled on a favourite.

Just like the food, the wine list is high quality but deliberately affordable. To take white wine as an example, by the glass there was a supremely crispy Stellenbosch and for a bottled treat it was difficult to look beyond a first class Chardonnay – the 2005 New Zealand ‘Muddy Water’. The name does a great disservice to its memorable fruity and honeyish favour.

A new restaurant has arrived in King’s Cross/St. Pancras which will satisfy the discerning diner without them going over budget. The culinary highlights map of London is having to be swiftly redrawn.
