Hokkien Chan Overview
The classy design and décor and the smart new look brings together key Oriental features with clean and contemporary Western lines. The entrance, elegantly understated, offers access to the lower ground bar and restaurant via the stairs or lift. The backlit bar with its neat granite top and spacious seating area is a welcome retreat where City executives can relax and enjoy wines, champagnes and beers in vibrant yet unobtrusive surroundings.
Booths for more informal dining are inviting and have very comfortable banquette seating upholstered in cream leather and brown velvet. Wall panels covered in light hessian and bold stylised flower patterns add to the dramatic effect. Deep burgundies, dark taupes, bold pinks and clean lines provide the perfect backdrop to display the fine, modern Oriental art which enriches the main room. Slightly raised, the entrance to this area is framed by a wood screen. Throughout the restaurant, fine sheer fabrics soften the overall look whilst the rich dark wood and bespoke murals and suspended ceiling panels create an exciting contrast.
The new Pan Asian menu draws on the cuisines of Thailand, China, Malaysia Hong Kong and Singapore, introducing the palate to intense and dynamic flavours. The menu bursts with tempting new combinations of spices and colours, such as the Three way scallops, an exquisite appetiser where scallops are prepared with ginger and soy, with sea spices and with glass noodles and garlic (£8.95). Stir fried lobster (£28) is cooked according to several regional variations, whilst the moistness of Char barbecue sea bass (£12.95) is preserved by a banana leaf. Hokkien seafood platter (£50 for two people) is a feast of lobster, soft shell crab, tempura oysters, steamed scallops, BBQ prawns and crispy squid, and one of the restaurant’s signature dishes.
Healthy and tasty food prepared simply with fresh, authentic ingredients is key to every dish on the menu, so that each flavour can be discovered, savoured and enjoyed.
The wine list offers several choices by the glass and an enviable selection of wines from the best European and New World vineyards. The wines, from fresh crisp and dry to aromatic and floral, from smooth and to full flavoured and assertive, have been chosen to complement the subtle yet robust flavours of Pan-Asian cuisine.
Hokkien is perfect for either parties or functions. The venue can be hired exclusively and areas can be reserved in the bar for drink receptions. (Updated 30/01/2007)
