Cru Restaurant & Bar Overview

Cool, Crisp, Cru

Cru Restaurant is hidden away from general view in a side alley off Old Street. If it wasn’t for its huge red neon sign you wouldn't spot it, unless you took a wrong turn. This is a shame, because it's one of the better restaurants in the area. With its smooth background tunes and calming clean design it puts you in the relaxing mood from the get go. And, once settled inside, you realise that its seclusion from the hubbub of the busy London streets is a necessity rather than a shortcoming.

This sense of tranquillity was probably heightened by the fact that I arrived at the venue, before any of the dining tables were occupied. This meant that I had the waitress' full attention during the ordering process. Even when the place became packed, she didn't leave anyone drumming their fingernails and managed to do so with a constant smile.

After pondering a long time over the wine list, which is made up of carefully selected vintages from small producers, we order Chardonnay Jean-Claude Boisset Bourgogne Chardonnay Nuit-St-George France. This is a medium white wine with a fresh and fruity taste to it, an ideal choice to accompany our seafood starters.

The seared scallops with mousseline potatoes, garlic and parsley butter was not only artistically presented, but pleasantly delicious. While the mussels with coconut milk, chilli and coriander was a comparably stellar starter choice.

Thankfully, the quality of the cooking did not depreciate when it came to the main courses. Again I went for fish: pan-fried bream served with new potatoes, grilled fennel and salsa verde. The bream had an exquisite texture, as did the potatoes, but I could have done with a couple of extra drizzles of salsa verde. Then again I have a liking for lots of sauce. The Cru burger topped with tomatoes, gherkins, Roquefort & deep fried onions served with homemade chips had a chic, but butch look to it. It was mouth-stretchingly juicilious. (Updated 07/02/2007)
