Cork & Bottle Wine Bar Overview
‘In a world full of so much great food and wine, why settle for a slab of quiche and a glass of boring plonk?’ asks Cork & Bottle owner Don Hewitson. And certainly there’s nothing dull about this bar’s 24-page wine menu.
First though, you have to find the place which is pretty much smack bang in the heart of London’s tourist district, but once you make it to either of its unassuming entrances and down the winding staircase past walls covered in vintage Champagne posters, you’ll have entered a smoke-free atmosphere a world away from the sex shops and tackiness just above.
Most people are seated and there’s not too much room to prop up the bar so reserving a table the day before is definitely worthwhile. However, you can usually put your name on a list on arrival and the very pleasant staff will call you over when your turn comes.
Service in the evening is at the bar. But that’s not the hard bit – sifting through that great long list of wines from across the world (average price is £20 a bottle) and deciding what to eat with it: baked duck breast, caramelised red onion and mozzarella, Lancashire black pudding for example, is the tricky part. Mains are priced between £6-15, steaks are a tenner and deserts £5.50 They also do 3 course bistro lunches for under £15.
Running since 1971 the Cork and Bottle has gained a deservedly enviable reputation which, even as the trusty cork gives way to the screw top, shows little sign of drying up. (Updated 21/08/2006)
