Bhangra Beat Overview

The Bhangra Beat boasts itself as “London’s premier Balti House”. It’s a steep claim to make and a more honest title would be ‘a nice enough curry in Covent Garden’. But then again, when has honesty ever played a part in advertising?

Restaurateur Shamim Khan who owns Bhangra Beat says "With Bhangra Beat, I want to bring the most traditional dishes from all corners of India, maintain the classic Indian recipes and enhance the offering with some signature dishes to reflect the changing food trends in contemporary India". A modest aim.

For those wanting a quick spot of decently priced lunch or dinner before heading to the theatre, this restaurant will cater perfectly for your needs. A set menu starts from £5.95 and it’s self-service, so hungry punters can get straight to the crunch. The food is good even if the range doesn’t deviate much from your traditional Indian/English love affair of a good old Tikka Massala.

The most unique part of the menu is the low-fat option. Anyone worried about ‘a moment on the lips being a life-time on the hips’ can have their dish cooked with less oil and fat. A wonderful choice to have, and I felt much less guilty polishing off my three courses - until I realised later I’d actually forgotten to ask for the diet version. Oh well, I’ll just have to remember for next time.

It’s certainly not “London’s Premier Balti House’, but it is an inexpensive, pleasant experience for those not wanting to miss the beginning of ‘The Lion King’.
