Beach Blanket Babylon Overview
If you are looking for a venue with a wow factor, this may well be it - it’s one of the most fascinating venues you’ll find in London. Beach Blanket Babylon - the nonsense name itself is a good indication of the chaos that is about to ensue - is a magpie’s nest, packed full of the weird and the wonderful - sculptures, chandeliers, glitterballs, candles, mirrors and mosaics - all assembled haphazardly in the fairytale setting of a huge, cavernous grotto.
A central bar fills the main room, already bustling with activity as the Friday night crowd warms up, with archways leading off to the left and right to hidden chambers with low ceilings and colossal fireplaces. A spiral staircase and drawbridge guard the entrance to their basement restaurant, gaudy and glamorous - a mix of gothic art, velvet cushions and dim lighting with prices to match.
By this point, intoxicated by the jumble of colours, textures and styles, I needed a stiff drink to calm my senses. Following the lead of the rest of the punters we started on shooters - tangy lemondrops hit the spot at £5.90 each and the main cocktail menu is almost as inspiring as the décor around you. Needless to say, this is one treasure trove where you’ll need to bring your own pot of gold: cocktails start at £8.50 and a mediocre meal for two will set you back about £100 including wine and service.
